    Our local Shire Council is working on its Rating Strategy for the next four years. The draft has been out for public consultation for a couple of weeks.

    I put in a submission today. It’s good to get a chance to express an opinion on such matters.

    Our municipality has about six differential rate categories. So there is the “base” level General Rate and one for Farms (who get a discount), Commercial/manufacturing (who are charged a premium), mining (who get slugged as much as is allowed) and various Vacant Land categories.

    Council was going to propose a “Municipal Charge” – a flat tax on all properties. That got knocked on the head pretty quickly.

    We’ll see what happens…
