I learned by the repetition method and that has served me well. Times tables and spelling, with the words broken into syllables all written on large sheets of butchers paper held together at the top with lengths of pine and a slender rope so it could be hung on the freestanding blackboard and the pages turned.
And we sat with out arms crossed on the desk and repeated parrot fashion. When I hear about the literacy and numeracy problems students have today, I wonder what was wrong with the old method of learning. The majority of my generation seem to be perfectly capable of reading, writing and doing their sums without too much hesitation.
