Yes Beatrice, they certainly didn’t mince words two hundred years ago. It came straight from the shoulder so to speak. But life was lived differently then, and society was much closer to the natural world. At least I believe so, from what I have read of those times.
I think most of the modern ‘revisions’ of those old stories have been toned down to reflect our present day approach to life. I do raise an eyebrow or two when I read the stories in very old books though. So I take your point.
And I do think children are able to adjust to many things and accept all manner of speech when they feel secure in a loving home. So we need not worry too much.
